The year was 1926. The date, October 10th. The time was a quarter past the three o"clock hour. Little Isabelle received an invitation to the Halloween Ball, which was a rare occurrence for her, since she had relocated to this small New England town just three months ago. It was during the July fourth weekend, and by then, everyone who was considered important already had their holiday schedules filled for the rest of the season. A cursory glance at the elegant white paper of the invitation hinted at the uniqueness of this particular Halloween Ball.
Excited, Isabelle hurried to her mother and eagerly presented the delivered invitation. Her mother's face lit up with joy at the sight, proud that her daughter had successfully made new friends at school. Overwhelmed with happiness, she suggested they visit Mr. Goodnoes Dry Goods store to browse through the assortment of color fast holiday crepe papers for a special Halloween costume fitting for such a grand event, emphasizing that her old hobo outfits would not suffice.
After school, they made their way to the dry goods store, where they carefully selected exquisite black, white, and orange crepe patterns from the renowned Dennison Manufacturing Company. Mr. Goodnoes was known for offering only the finest quality goods. With all the necessary supplies in hand, they hastened back home to commence the sewing process, stopping briefly at the ice cream store for a last delightful Indian summer treat.
As the much-anticipated weekend approached, the night of the ball finally arrived. The atmosphere was filled with excitement, illuminated by parade lanterns casting an eerie glow in the moonlight, featuring spooky faces, ghosts, goblins, and sounds of laughter and celebration. The children exuded sheer joy, adorned in colorful and captivating costumes.
However, Isabelle stood out as the most enchanting of them all, at least in the eyes of the young boy who resided next door...
